Gardavelle, the protagonist, is wrenched from her home town and chosen to be part of Mars’s so called superior society. She copes with the longing for her family, the abrupt change of lifestyle, the expectations she is held to, and the challenges she has to endure to prove herself worthy.

Celia, her younger sister, Connie, and their seemingly loving parents move from their home town Georgia to Florida, where they buy a massively discounted house. After about a week of living there, the neighbors seem to be exhibiting strange behaviors that startle Celia and her sister. Soon, the behaviors change from disturbing to violent. Celia has to protect herself as well as her little sister, in the meantime, figuring out a horrible secret that their parents have and ending with a surprising twist.
